Teaser Tuesday - Amethyst #1

Aright everyone, here's a little teaser from my current WiP, Amethyst. So far I have roughly 10,000 words.

Four large male wolves jumped out of all sides of the clearing; we were surrounded. I assumed they were hostile because judging by their snarls and bared fangs and raised hackles, they didn’t drop in to say ‘hello’. All of a sudden there was movement everywhere. Things were happening too fast. The largest male rammed into Yanil. Caught off guard, he fell to the ground. As if there was an invisible signal, the other three leapt to attack.

The air was suddenly filled with high-pitched barks and snarling and growling. I decided I couldn’t stay paralyzed any longer. I jumped on the nearest attacker, who was a small but bulky black wolf holding on to Yanil’s bloody hind leg. Snarling, I leapt and bit down on his throat, hard, and held on for dear life.

The wolf yelped, surprised, and let go of Yanil’s leg. He twisted his neck, teeth sinking into my fur, and tried to shake me off. Pain seared through my body, and I loosened my grip and dropped to the ground.

“This battle is not for you, pup,” the black wolf growled. Then he jumped to attack me.

In those few moments I noticed that Yanil was still fighting strongly against two of the male wolves. I couldn’t find the third one. I didn’t dare stop to look.

I focused on my black attacker. Thinking that he was one of the four wolves who attacked my only friend out of cold blood, I grew angrier. Anger gave me strength.

I dodged the wolf’s bite by a whisker. I counterattacked by biting his foreleg. But before he could catch me, I dashed out of reach.

We looked at each other. I could see something very close to hatred in his eyes. I shivered from the cold malice from his glare. We were both panting, and I felt blood roll down my sides. After he caught his breath, the wolf charged me. I had to remember through my red haze of anger that though this wolf was smaller than the other adult wolves, he was still twice my size and had twice my strength, so I could not charge him. Instead, I leaped out of the way. My heart plummeting, I realized that I had underestimated his speed, and was much too late. I felt strong teeth sink into my scruff, and I couldn’t shake them off. A swift movement, and then…I was flying.

Time seemed to slow. I felt the wind whistle through my blood-soaked fur. But the feeling of freedom was short-lived. I hit one of the boulders headfirst and fell to the ground. I yelped automatically when I landed on my hind leg in an unnatural position. The snow around me was suddenly tinged with red. Gradually my thoughts became incoherent. I felt blood roll down my forehead and into my closed eyes.

Then, everything went black.

Well, that's it for now. Tell me what you think :)
